Dental Crowns in Perth

crown

What is it?

A Dental Crown in perth can be viewed as a helmet to protect a damaged tooth from further impairment. In addition, crowns are fitted on top of a dental Implant in order to create a natural look. Porcelain and ceramic crowns can be matched to the colour of your remaining teeth. Not only can this regain the look of a natural tooth but also aid with natural function. There are many scenarios when a crown may be recommended as a treatment for oral health. This includes if there is a large filling required but not much original tooth left, to prevent or restore a fractured cracked tooth, to help with alignment or poorly shaped teeth, or to protect previous dental procedures such as a root canal.

What’s involved?

Just like a helmet protects your head, a crown acts the same way to protect your compromised tooth. Two appointments are usually required for a crown. At the first appointment, the tooth will be prepared to fit the crown. If extensive decay is present that doesn’t need a root canal or a large portion of the tooth is missing due to damage, your dentist will fill or build up the tooth in order to give it the ability to support the crown. Your dentist will then either take an impression or digitally scan your teeth so the crown can be designed. In the mean time your dentist will create a temporary crown for you until the permanent one is ready to be fitted. Once the crown is ready the temporary crown will be removed and the permanent crown will be fitted. Throughout all appointments, you will be numbed to ensure the procedure is painless and comfortable.

The assessment, impressions, x-rays, or scans shouldn’t cause any discomfort and during the procedure the appropriate numbing or anaesthetic is used. This is to ensure that you are comfortable and that we are able to perform the procedure without interruption. In some cases Sedation Dentistry may be used. Sedation Dentistry is the ideal option for those experiencing anxiety about dental treatments. Putting off a visit to the dentist or certain procedure can compromise your oral health in the long run. Our dentists at Advanced Dental Spa are understanding and experienced with patients who may not be the biggest fans of dental clinics. We are patient and courteous and aim to make your treatment the most pleasant experience possible. Crown FAQs

Why do I need a crown, why is it better (and more expensive) than a filling, and what are my options?

The need for a crown on your tooth arises because the tooth is compromised and needs further reinforcement to allow it to continue functioning. Without the reinforcement provided by a crown, the tooth will deteriorate faster and reach the end of its life sooner.
The main reasons for needing a crown are as follows:

  • Large fillings: When there is very little tooth structure left, the tooth is unable to hold a filling in place and will fail much quicker. Additionally, there is a high risk that the small remaining tooth structure left will also break. The material of a crown is much stronger than filling material, and a crown also reinforces and protects the tooth from fracturing.
  • Cracks in teeth: Cracks in teeth will not heal and will only worsen in time as you continue to use the tooth. To protect the tooth from catastrophic fracture where the tooth splits in half (and then needs to be extracted), a crown is the best treatment for this.
  • Broken or severely decayed or worn down teeth: Crowns act to restore the functionality of broken or severely decayed teeth
  • Aesthetic issues: Crowns can also be used to fix crooked or stained teeth.
  • Other options: The tooth can just be filled, but the longevity of the filling is significantly compromised. In addition, the limited remaining tooth structure is at high risk of fracturing, which will only cause pain and put you at high risk of losing the tooth.
How much do crowns cost and is it covered by my health insurance?

Crowns are covered under major dental cover in your private health insurance policy. It is best to check with your health fund if you are covered for this and what your limits are.

Do I need a root canal with a crown?

No, most crowns don’t need root canal treatment if the nerve is not infected or inflamed. However, most root canals (especially for the back teeth) need crowns.

How long do crowns last?

The amount of time that crowns will last before needing to be redone depends on factors such as how you take care of your teeth, and the health of your mouth in general. Many will last 10 years, but it is critical that you are flossing, brushing and getting regular cleaning to maintain their longevity.

What if I wait and do my crown later?

There will be long term repercussions where the existing problem on your tooth will worsen and eventually lead to fracture/failure of the filling, pain, need for a root canal and potential loss of the tooth. For example, if there is an existing crack, this will only propagate further and a portion of tooth will fracture in the near future. How long this progression takes depends on the severity of the problem.

What materials are used for crowns?

Crowns are made of porcelain, metal, or gold alloy or zirconia. Each material has it’s individual strengths and weaknesses and the material used is dependent on patient factors. The dentist will determine the best material to suit your tooth.
