Veneers

What is it?

A Veneer reshapes the front side of the tooth, that is, the side of the tooth others can see when you talk or smile. Veneers are thinner and more conservative than crowns and thus require less filing down of the tooth. Veneers are used to treat cosmetic concerns with your smile such as discolouration, minor shape concerns, and other instances when teeth may need extra protection.

What’s involved?

The first steps in receiving a veneer is treatment planning to understand your goal and expectations. During this process we will assess the outcomes you are trying to achieve and whether veneers are the best treatment option. An impression or scan will be taken to design the mock up of your ideal new smile.

Your teeth will be conservatively filed to the same thickness as the veneer. Then an impression or scan will then be taken of your teeth, and a master ceramist will fabricate your veneers. During this time, temporary veneers will be fitted to ensure you can visualize your final smile and make any necessary adjustments or nuances to the final veneers.

Once the veneers are ready, it will be fitted and any final adjustments will be provided before the tooth is prepared to be bonded to the veneers.

The entire treatment from planning to finish shouldn’t cause any discomfort, and during the procedure appropriate numbing or anaesthetic will be used. This will ensure that you are comfortable and that we are able to perform the procedure without interruption. In some cases Sedation Dentistry may be used. Sedation Dentistry is the ideal option for those experiencing anxiety about dental treatments. Our dentists at Advanced Dental Spa are understanding and experienced with patients who may not be the biggest fans of dental clinics. We are patient and courteous and aim to make your treatment the most pleasant experience possible. Veneer FAQs

What is the difference between porcelain veneers and a composite bonded veneer?

Composite bonded veneers are made with a normal filling material built up to fix the aesthetic concerns. Porcelain veneers, also known as veneers or porcelain laminates are crafted from a strong layer of porcelain.

Composite veneers are not as long lasting as porcelain. They also do not look as natural as porcelain veneers and tend to stain and discolour over time.

Can veneers fix my crooked teeth?

Yes, veneers can change the colour, shape and alignment of your existing teeth to have a straighter, whiter and brighter smile. Veneers can treat the following concerns:

  • gaps between teeth
  • discolouration
  • chipped or broken teeth
  • Crooked or poorly aligned teeth
  • Oddly shaped teeth
Why do I need an occlusal splint with my veneers?

People who grind their teeth MUST wear an occlusal splint (nightguard) to protect their veneers from chipping. Porcelain is strong but brittle in nature, thus prone to chipping if it undergoes grinding forces.

How much do veneers cost and is it covered by my health insurance?

Veneers are covered under major dental cover in your private health insurance policy. It is best to check with your health fund if you are covered for this and what your limits are.

The prices vary depending on the number of veneers and complexity of treatment, it is recommended you have an initial consultation to determine if you are the right candidate for veneers and to receive a correct estimate of price.
